Camping Recipes

Dried beans, bacon, flour and tea. That's what most early settlers had to exist on in the 1800s or even the early 1900s. It doesn't give you a great deal of scope for exciting camping recipes.

Yet people 'made do' and created bread, cakes, damper, Johnny cakes, scones, flapjacks. All kinds of baked and fried foods made with just flour, a little salt and baking powder. Eggs helped, but they were a luxury. So was fresh milk a luxury unless you happened to own your own milch cow.

What you will put into your own favorite camping recipes will depend entirely on whether you are planning a hurried overnight or weekend camp, or whether you will be part of a standing camp of a week or more. That's the only way you'll have enough time to cook the more fancy camping recipes.

Who are you cooking for? Your camping recipes for a bunch of kids will be totally different from your camping recipes for a group of sophisticated adults.

Basically, your kids are going to be happy with pancakes, hot dogs, burgers, sandwiches, fruit juice and cola. Easy camping recipes to throw together, and if you're using paper plates, pretty darn easy to clean up afterwards also.

But if you want camping recipes that are a bit more sophisticated, bring along a cast iron Dutch Oven and you'll be able to wow your friends with baked foods, roasts, stews, real baked beans, chili, you name it.

One word to the wise, however. Unless you're already an extremely talented cook, test your cooking equipment and your camping recipes out in your backyard before you do it for real. Then you won't have an audience to laugh at your mistakes!
